YESTERDAY: Physical changes in matter. Students learned of differences between chemical changes and physical changes in matter. Yesterday's lab allowed students to view water in all the states at the same time with observable changes between each. Warm water (liquid) was poured into a bottle. Ice (solid) was placed at the top. Vapor (gas) was observed rising from the liquid while it later condensed back to its liquid state at the top.

Last week, 5th graders participated in “The Candy Rush.” Each student received a variety of candy. Each type of candy was worth a different amount, varying from 1-1,000,000. Students had to sort the candy and find the value of their candy. Then they used the information they collected to analyze their data. We learned about place value and comparing numbers, as well as standard, expanded and word form. We also recognized the difference between the digit and value of a digit. Lastly, students enjoyed eating their candy!
