The 4th graders are learning about place value in math! Today was a "sweet" lesson because we used M&Ms to help us learn to find the different place values up to the 100,000 place, round numbers to indicated place values, and also compare numbers! Students enjoyed the M&Ms when they were finished!

YESTERDAY: Physical changes in matter.
Students learned of differences between chemical changes and physical changes in matter. Yesterday's lab allowed students to view water in all the states at the same time with observable changes between each. Warm water (liquid) was poured into a bottle. Ice (solid) was placed at the top. Vapor (gas) was observed rising from the liquid while it later condensed back to its liquid state at the top.

Last week, 5th graders participated in “The Candy Rush.” Each student received a variety of candy. Each type of candy was worth a different amount, varying from 1-1,000,000. Students had to sort the candy and find the value of their candy. Then they used the information they collected to analyze their data. We learned about place value and comparing numbers, as well as standard, expanded and word form. We also recognized the difference between the digit and value of a digit. Lastly, students enjoyed eating their candy!

The 4th graders worked together on a STEM project today. The goal was to sketch and build a bucket tower with the bucket suspended. Students were given a 3oz cup, 20 straws, 36 inches of tape, and 36 inches of string. The goal was to see which tower could hold the most weight. All the teams did a wonderful job planning and working hard together. The winning team as Josiah Gage, Eislee Boatman, and Hayden McMinn.

STEAM today: The student's challenge was to create a tower out of spaghetti noodles and marshmallows. They were judge on the tallest and the strongest. The students build excellent towers which were tall but not very strong. It was a fun task anyways! Great effort!

This Kindergarten class is INCREDIBLE!! We had a great first day together!! #KindergartenRocks!

The 4th graders wrapped up their opinion writing unit this week! It was called, "This or That Animal Debate." Students learned how to state an opinion, gather facts, oragnize those facts, then write a 5 to 6 paragraph paper on a debate of their choice. A few of their choices were: would you rather wrestle an alligator or a black bear, would you rather be raised by monkeys or wild dogs, would you rather have a pet python or a pet chimpanzee, and would you rather swim with a box jelly fish or a great white shark? They went through the whole writing process and then went and had a debate in Mrs. A's ELP class. The 4th graders were able to change the minds of some high school students in each debate! Way to go 4th grade!
