HS VB Recap: Spartan Volleyball hosted Ark City Christian Academy on Thursday September 26th in a best 3 out of 5 sets. Spartans won 25-13, 25-12, and 25-14. They will now travel to South Haven on Tuesday October 1st facing South Haven and Flinthills starting at 4:00 pm.

The 7th graders took a "brain break" with some STEAM activities this week. Stations they could choose from included Makey-Makey Maker Space using technology and fruit to create music...Legos...Scratch Computer Coding and Snap Circuit Skill Builders. A little later in the course drones and robots will be introduced.

DON'T FORGET TONIGHT IS MEET THE SPARTAN NIGHT AT CEDAR VALE!! Starting @ 6:30pm with Hot dogs, chips and water. Then the Pep Rally starts @ 7:00pm. Football practice will be open to the public @ 4:30; Admission to watch practice is GATORADE or POWERADE. Hope to see Everyone there!!

The 4th graders accomplished a STEM activity called Save the Water Bottle. Students were given 10 straws, yarn, and a few rubber bands. Each team had to come up with a way to pick up a full 20oz water bottle out of a 5ft x 5ft square. After trials, errors, and rethinking their strategies, all four teams were able to lift the water bottle out of the square successfully.

This week, in 5th grade, students have been discussing how people overcome obstacles.Today, Robbie Nichols visited our 5th grade classroom to share with our class about how he reads and writes as a person who is blind. He shared how the Braille system works and even had the kids make a “human Braille cell” to make the alphabet. We learned so much and loved having him visit and share worth our class!

Spartan Baseball beat Oxford 17-0 in 3rd and 17-3 in 5th. Spartan Softball won 9-3 and lost 4-2 to Oxford.

A huge shout out to the Dexter Jr/Sr High School Band for receiving the highest rating of 1 at State Band Festival on April 11th. These students worked their tails off to prepare for this and improved leaps and bounds from their rating of 2 at SCBL Music Festival in early March. Celebrate your efforts. They were well worth it!

WEATHER ALERT FOR PROM - SATURDAY, APRIL 13th:
Outdoor pictures are planned for 5:30 p.m. at the stone barn. If it's too muddy, pictures will be on the steps of the Baptist Church at the corner of Main & Kansas Ave. downtown. In the event or rain, outdoor pictures will be cancelled altogether.
Walk-in will be at 6:30 p.m. Procession will begin at the south end of the high school down the east walk to the commons area. Parents, family and friends may gather on the lawn to watch. In the event of rain, the procession will be at the NORTH end of the gymnasium down the interior, east side of the gym. Onlookers may come inside and have a seat in the bleachers. Children MUST be seated and supervised. Public will be dismissed and doors will close at 7:00 p.m. for the gala to begin.

YESTERDAY: HS/MS did a Homecoming Activity at lunch called the “Sweetheart Challenge.” With their class, students had to move a sweetheart candy from one side of the table to the other by blowing air through a straw. We’re not sure who won, not all boxes of candy were equal. Students still had fun with it!!

6th grade students have been geologists studying the types of rock found locally, (limestone, sandstone and shale) and how that relates to finding oil and natural gas in Kansas and Oklahoma. They learned that the Permian Sea was what deposited the fossils here millions of years ago creating fossil fuels, and they have done numerous experiments on permeability and porosity to see which type of rock would hold oil the best.

Due to the weather, tonights Junior High game at Flint Hills will not be played this evening. We will make up the game if both schools can find a day before the start of the Junior High Tournament.

Before we can fly our drones, the STEAM teams have been learning about and practicing principles of flight: lift, thrust, and drag. Winners of the initial flight challenge were Kaleb and Cadie, who created the most economical aircraft, capable of going the greatest distance, with the heaviest payload.
For the rotor challenge, testing which rotor design could stay aloft longest, the winners were Timber and Cale.

TIS THE SEASON TO GIVE: 16 boxes full of food were delivered today throughout Dexter! The remaining food was delivered to the food pantry at the Dexter Outreach Church and the Dexter blessing box that is located behind the museum. Those in need of utilizing the food pantry can call 620-229-.0060. Thank you all for helping us complete our December Community involvement project!! We had so much fun with this!

LAST WEEK: 7th grade was busy with sweet solutions; learning how temperature, pressure, stirring, and surface area affect the rate of how quickly a solute goes into a solvent to make a solution. Sugar cubes were crushed and stirred among other things to observe the differences. Students were also intrigued to watch a demonstration by Mr. Wise observing a styrofoam cup floating on water, but dissolving in acetone. So the type of solvent makes a difference too!

LAST WEEK: Tis the Season to Give Spirit Week was a HUGE success!! Here are the totals from the week:

TONIGHT: The Spartan Awards for Fall Sports, MS/HS Football and Volleyball, are at 6:30pm in Cedar Vale's Gym.

The third grade has enjoyed having all of our Cowley County Extension agents bring lessons into our classroom over the past month. We have studied the life cycles of plants and animals, learned about food coming from plants and animals, and prepared a special treat called "egg in a bread basket." We have been anxiously awaiting the hatching of the eggs that were incubated in our classroom, and the chicks finally arrived! It was a great experience!

This year, 5th graders were given the opportunity to enter a poster contest put on by the Caney Valley Electric Cooperative Association. Students were to submit a poster that showed examples of electrical safety. This was a voluntary activity and 5 students in our class participated! Logan Becker, Jax Deiter, Austin Potter, Wade Martin and Wyatt Martin all submitted posters. Wyatt Martin was selected as the winner of the contest and received a $25 check. All of the posters should appear in the Kansas Country Living magazine as space allows! In addition our class was awarded a $50 check to use for the 5th grade class. We are looking forward to seeing their posters in print! Great job, 5th graders!!

LAST WEEK: After a busy week, the 6th grade class ended with a thrilling Thursday by creating Bristlebots! First, students designed their robots with tiny motors, batteries, toothbrushes and pipe cleaners. They had to troubleshoot ways to make them work, go faster and slower. Finally, they used the vibrating creatures to paint Halloween Robot Abstract Art pieces to display in the halls. "Nailed it!"

The 4th graders have been learning about the different types of rocks, weathering, erosion, and deposition in science. Yesterday we were able to walk out to Grouse Creek and search for the types of rocks, and also see where weathering, erosion, and deposition have occurred! It was a great afternoon of exploring!

We are proud to announce, recently our PE department was approved for the Legacy Regional Community Foundation "Active Play Matching Grant."
The outline of this grant is to help address the health of the children in your elementary school. The purpose of this initiative is to enhance built environment and/or equipment purchase that provide and promote schoolchildren to be more physically active in order to address the rising rate of obesity in our area. The vision is to provide a space for public elementary schoolchildren in Cowley County to enjoy vigorous exercise through organized games and unstructured play before, during and after the school day. This grant is a 1:1 matching opportunity up to $2,000.
A Special Thank you to the Legacy Foundation for approving this grant and to our Administration and school board for matching it! Our students will really benefit from the equipment being purchased through this grant! Thank you!!

The 4th graders have been learning about static electricity in science. Today students had to rub a balloon on their head, then use the static to make an aluminum can roll. Then they had to see if their hypothesis on how far the can would roll was correct or not by measuring the distance it rolled. Some students were surprised at how far they could get their can to roll!

HS Volleyball Regional will be at Caldwell HS; with the following schools: Argonia HS; Burden-Central HS; Caldwell HS; Dexter HS\Cedar Vale HS; Oxford HS; South Haven HS; Udall HS. Brackets and seeding won't be posted until Oct. 10th after 10:00am. The first round will be played on Oct. 16th.

The 4th graders have been learning about conductors and insulators in science. Today they got to use what they have learned and play a game of freeze tag. Students were either an electrifying student (the ones that are "It"), a conductor, or an insulator. Since conductors let electricity pass through easily, those students had to feeeze immediately. The insulators had to be tagged 3 times before they were frozen because they don't allow electricity to flow through. The students had fun applying what they have learned!

On Thursday we had a special visitor, Donna Martin, in fifth grade. For our Native American unit, students have been learning about the different regions where Native Americans settled. We learned about the different types of clothing, food, land, tools, transportation and shelter each region used. Mrs. Martin is an expert on the Native Americans in the Plains region and came on Thursday to show our students how to build a tipi and share some stories and artifacts from that region. Students helped to build the tipi with Mrs. Martins help and then we all went inside the tipi to learn about the Native Americans and pass around artifacts. It was a great day of learning.

YESTERDAY:8th grade learning Earth Science. The lithosphere (hard part of the Earth) is made up of rocks that contain minerals. We're testing rocks for calcite. A few drops of acetic acid are dropped on a piece of limestone & granite. The limestone reacted by producing bubbles of CO2 gas. The granite remained unchanged.

4th grade students are participating in Classroom Economy. Students have a classroom job. They earn classroom cash by doing their job, being kind, doing well on tests, using manners, etc. Students can also lose money for behaviors, talking, not following directions, being rude, etc. The 4th graders must also pay $1,000 rent on their desk each month. Cooper Criss was able to pay off his desk (and live rent free for the rest of 4th grade) by paying $3,000 all at once. Way to go, Cooper!

Josie Gage entered a writing contest and won 1st place in our Kansas congressional district 4. The contest was put on by the Kansas Book Festival and the theme was to describe Kansas with one word or phrase. Hers was "Rugged Beauty". She was awarded a $500 check in the Senate Chamber of the Capital Building in Topeka on Saturday, September 8th.

YESTERDAY: Physical changes in matter.
Students learned of differences between chemical changes and physical changes in matter. Yesterday's lab allowed students to view water in all the states at the same time with observable changes between each. Warm water (liquid) was poured into a bottle. Ice (solid) was placed at the top. Vapor (gas) was observed rising from the liquid while it later condensed back to its liquid state at the top.

Last week, 5th graders participated in “The Candy Rush.” Each student received a variety of candy. Each type of candy was worth a different amount, varying from 1-1,000,000. Students had to sort the candy and find the value of their candy. Then they used the information they collected to analyze their data. We learned about place value and comparing numbers, as well as standard, expanded and word form. We also recognized the difference between the digit and value of a digit. Lastly, students enjoyed eating their candy!

The 4th graders worked together on a STEM project today. The goal was to sketch and build a bucket tower with the bucket suspended. Students were given a 3oz cup, 20 straws, 36 inches of tape, and 36 inches of string. The goal was to see which tower could hold the most weight. All the teams did a wonderful job planning and working hard together. The winning team as Josiah Gage, Eislee Boatman, and Hayden McMinn.

It's all about teamwork! The 4th graders are off to a great start learning to work as a team in the classroom! Groups were give one large piece of construction paper, scissors, and glue. Students had to figure out a way to use the paper to make the longest paper chain. All the groups worked well together to complete the task!

The 4th graders wrapped up their opinion writing unit this week! It was called, "This or That Animal Debate." Students learned how to state an opinion, gather facts, oragnize those facts, then write a 5 to 6 paragraph paper on a debate of their choice. A few of their choices were: would you rather wrestle an alligator or a black bear, would you rather be raised by monkeys or wild dogs, would you rather have a pet python or a pet chimpanzee, and would you rather swim with a box jelly fish or a great white shark? They went through the whole writing process and then went and had a debate in Mrs. A's ELP class. The 4th graders were able to change the minds of some high school students in each debate! Way to go 4th grade!

FRIDAY, MAY 18: Dexter Track and Field competed in their Regional at Burlington. There were a couple who came very close to making State: Ellie Boatman placed 6th in the 400m and Triple Jump; and Kyndel Randall placed 6th in the 100m hurdles and 5th in the 300m hurdles. Great Season Ladies!!
For the boys, Morgan Carson placed 2nd in 300m hurdles qualifying for State. He will run prelims on Friday at Wichita State around 4:45pm. Good Luck Morgan!

YESTERDAY: Continuing at the Awards Assembly, Tyler Vogele received Best of Show in Metals with his smoker, Overall Outstanding Metal Worker, Overall Best of Show (Smoker) and Mr. Kuntz's award for Overall Outstanding Shop Student of the Year. Other awards included Arik Artherton Runner-up Overall Best of Show for his coffin; Alana Long received Runner-up for Best Scroll Saw for her Girrafes and Jamie Freedman received Best HS Scroll Saw for her Lighthouse.

YESTERDAY: Continuing at the Awards Assembly, Mr. Kuntz honored High School Fine Arts students who received awards on their projects. Avery Vaden received Best of Show Drafting, Overall Outstanding Draftsman and Best of show in Woods. Also, Marissa Bratcher recieved Overall Outstanding Woodworker and Best Wood or Metal Art.

YESTERDAY: At the grades 6-12 Awards Assembly, Mr. Criss honored students who had either a 3.5 to 3.7 or 3.7 to 4.0 cumulative GPA in high school. YESTERDAY:Futuremaker Mobile Lab out of WSU Tech (the science and technology campus of Wichita State), spent the day here where they presented a series of hands-on virtual reality lab exercises where students, grades 8 - 11. They got to experience the "virtual reality" of technical careers in high demand areas. Students had fun participating in various experiments such as 3D imaging with a welding simulation and others like a 3D computerized gravity experiment. Students rotated between two mobile labs in 70 minute sessions and wrapped up at the end with materials on careers available on the campus in Wichita.

TUES. APR. 24: HS Spartan Track travels to Central for their meet. There were some medalist and placers at the meet. Ellie Boatman placed 3rd in Long Jump and 5th in the 400m; Kyndel Randall placed 2nd (by a tenth) in the 100m hurdles and 4th in the 300m hurdles; and Reagan Warburton placed 3rd in the 1600m. For the Boys, Brogan Meyers placed 4th in the Discus; and Braden Snyder placed 2nd (by 3 feet) in the Javelin. GREAT JOB EVERYONE!!!

Please join us this evening at 7:00pm in the Dexter High School Gymnasium for the K-5 Spring Program. The concert will feature the K-2 students in a musical entitled "The Principal and the Pea," which is based on the traditional fairy tale where a queen determines the future princess of the kingdom by placing a pea under her bed. Students in Grades 3-5 will be performing a musical called "Swamped," which focuses on the journey in the lives of swamp creatures as they plan for a swamp party happening later that evening. Lastly, the 5th Grade Band will perform a piece based on the sailing of the Spanish Armada in 1588. We hope to see you there!

YESTERDAY: The 4th graders have been learning about weathering, erosion, and deposition. The students were divided into teams to do a science relay! Each team had a Lego landform. One at a time students had to break (weathering) a Lego off the landform, take (erosion) the Lego to the other end of he playground by crab walking, bear crawling, sprinting, running backwards, and kangaroo hopping. Once they got to the end of the playground they would drop (deposition) the Lego to begin a new landform. They had fun , but they were sure dirty and worn out!

TODAY: Grades 7-12 Concert Band will be performing at the State Large Group Festival at Winfield High School.The band performs at 1:40pm in the Winfield High School Auditorium. GOOD LUCK!!!

LAST NIGHT: HS Spartans competed in the Border Queen Meet at Caldwell HS. There were several medalist: Morgan Carson took 3rd in 300m hurdles, Brogan Myers took 5th in Discus, Braden Snyder took 2nd in Javelin, the boys 4x800m took 5th (Darius, Joe, Blake, Morgan). For the girls: Ellie Boatman took 6th in long jump and 4th in triple jump, Kaylee Haden took 6th in the 100m hurdles, Kyndel Randall took 1st in the 100m hurdles, 5th in the 300m hurdles and 4th in the 100m, Reagan Warburton took 6th in Javelin and 5th in 800m, and the 4x800 took 3rd (Cierra, Kaylee, Essie, and Reagan). Great job Everyone!!!

The Spartan Baseball team splits with Sedan. The Blue Devils win the first game (7-4) and the Spartans take the nightcap (15-5) in 5 innings. Spartans are 4-4 on the year and will play Udall at Udall on Thursday. The Lady Spartans lost both games of the double header by a score of 10-2 and 15-3.

Due to potential weather, the JV baseball games for today have been cancelled.

The Spartan Baseball Team improves to 4-1 with a win in Dexter over Bluestem last night. The Varsity won a close contest 5-3. The JV won the nightcap over Bluestem. The Lady Spartan JV Softball team won both games of their double header against Tyro Christian.

Last nights results from Lady Spartan Softball @ South Haven. In game one the Lady Spartans were defeated by a score of 11-1 and in game two the Lady Spartans were defeated by a score of 5-4. The next action for the Lady Spartans will be on 4/16 at Cedar Vale against Sedan.

THURS. APR. 5: The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes participated in a state assessment kick off assembly. They started by competing in a minute to win it game called "Suck it up." Students and their teachers had to use a straw to suck a M&M up out of a bowl and transfer it to a different bowl. Their second game was a Saran wrap ball. Those were packed with candy and classroom economy cash! It was a fun assembly to get the elementary headed up for assessments that begin the week of Apr. 9!

The Dexter High School Choir was surprised and humbled today to host guest clinician Alyssa Toepfer. Mrs. Toepfer is a professional opera singer, Assistant Choral Director at Olathe North High School, and an Adjunct Professor of Voice at Ottawa University. She made the trip to Dexter to share her expertise and experiences to assist the choir in their preparation for Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival at Butler County Community College this weekend. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your gifts!

The Dexter 6th Grade Choir recently received the highest rating of 1 for their performance of Carry Me Home by Jean Anne Shafferman at the SCBL MS Music Festival on March 28th! They were so professional and received high praises from multiple teachers and volunteers for their maturity throughout the day. Way to represent!

Today's High School Track Meet at Douglas has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a future date TBD.

Due to miserable weather conditions today's scheduled junior high track meet at West Elk is being postponed and is rescheduled for Tuesday, April 17.

Both the MS and HS Track Teams will be competing tomorrow. The MS will be in West Elk and the HS will be in Douglas. Good Luck to both teams. Go! Spartans! Go!

Dexter High School After Prom 2018 will be held on Saturday April 7th following the Casino Royale themed prom. The after prom even will be sponsored by the sophomore parents. All students attending after prom and their dates must be at the Dexter High School old gym by 12:30 am. Each student and their date attending must have a parent/student signed permission form turned into the DHS office by Thursday, March 29th. This will be a fun night of games and prizes for all who attend. Breakfast will be served and students dismissed roughly at 5:30 am. (USD #471 has no affiliation with the after prom, this is driven and put on by parents. USD #471 wishes to thank them for their efforts to provide a safe environment for our students on this night!)

Today the Dexter High School Band will perform in the SCBL Music contest at Cowley County Community College. Good Luck!

On April 4th the Family Crisis Center will be presenting to Dexter students in grades 8-12. The educational presentation will be based on Dating Violence, Healthy Relationships and Boundaries, Bullying, Sexual Harassment and Sexual Assault and Consent. Throughout the presentation they will hit hard on social media at different points and that includes sexting and the possible consequences.
