LAST WEEK: 7th grade was busy with sweet solutions; learning how temperature, pressure, stirring, and surface area affect the rate of how quickly a solute goes into a solvent to make a solution. Sugar cubes were crushed and stirred among other things to observe the differences. Students were also intrigued to watch a demonstration by Mr. Wise observing a styrofoam cup floating on water, but dissolving in acetone. So the type of solvent makes a difference too!

YESTERDAY: Physical changes in matter. Students learned of differences between chemical changes and physical changes in matter. Yesterday's lab allowed students to view water in all the states at the same time with observable changes between each. Warm water (liquid) was poured into a bottle. Ice (solid) was placed at the top. Vapor (gas) was observed rising from the liquid while it later condensed back to its liquid state at the top.

Last week, 5th graders participated in “The Candy Rush.” Each student received a variety of candy. Each type of candy was worth a different amount, varying from 1-1,000,000. Students had to sort the candy and find the value of their candy. Then they used the information they collected to analyze their data. We learned about place value and comparing numbers, as well as standard, expanded and word form. We also recognized the difference between the digit and value of a digit. Lastly, students enjoyed eating their candy!

The 4th graders wrapped up their opinion writing unit this week! It was called, "This or That Animal Debate." Students learned how to state an opinion, gather facts, oragnize those facts, then write a 5 to 6 paragraph paper on a debate of their choice. A few of their choices were: would you rather wrestle an alligator or a black bear, would you rather be raised by monkeys or wild dogs, would you rather have a pet python or a pet chimpanzee, and would you rather swim with a box jelly fish or a great white shark? They went through the whole writing process and then went and had a debate in Mrs. A's ELP class. The 4th graders were able to change the minds of some high school students in each debate! Way to go 4th grade!

It's coming........USD #471 Dexter Schools is quickly approaching the completion of our web store. This site will allow the district to accept online payments for lunches, enrollments, fees, projects, etc...! The district will also be able to accept payment with a debit card or in person at the high school office, concession stands, etc...Our hope is that this will provide a time saving solution for families to make payments with a credit or debit card. Note our Web Store address (https://dexter.revtrak.net) to help with future transactions for your convenience. The site is not "live" yet but will be soon. We will make make the announcement when it goes live! You will also be able to access from your NEW mobile app or the district webpage at www.usd471.org!

Dexter High School After Prom 2018 will be held on Saturday April 7th following the Casino Royale themed prom. The after prom even will be sponsored by the sophomore parents. All students attending after prom and their dates must be at the Dexter High School old gym by 12:30 am. Each student and their date attending must have a parent/student signed permission form turned into the DHS office by Thursday, March 29th. This will be a fun night of games and prizes for all who attend. Breakfast will be served and students dismissed roughly at 5:30 am. (USD #471 has no affiliation with the after prom, this is driven and put on by parents. USD #471 wishes to thank them for their efforts to provide a safe environment for our students on this night!)
